Meet our Matches: Big Couple, Ian and Jamie, and Little Brother Devon

Ian Jamie Dev SQ

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Couples program is great for Couples interested in volunteering together. Big Couple Ian and Jamie have been matched their Little Brother, Dev, for four years. Dev is a sophomore in high school now, and not so “little” anymore! The trio enjoy building models, creating a photo album, going to the air and space museum, and many more activities. Our cameras caught up with the three as they were checking out a new remote control plane. Watch their campaign video here!

Do you guys have any particular activities that you enjoy sharing on your outings?

We like to do crafty things, like building models together. Right now, we’re working on building a model airplane! We also like going to see places, like the Pima Air and Space Museum, or events, like watching stock car racing. That one was a really good time!

Share a favorite memory or experience from your match.

One of our most memorable craft projects happened recently, where we put together a scrapbook of photos and memories from our four-year long match.
Ian and Dev also like to joke around and try to get a rise out each other. One afternoon, every time Ian left the room, he came back wearing a different hat. When Dev made a comment about it, Ian pretended that he had no idea what he was talking about. While Dev acted exasperated, it was obvious that he was really enjoying it!

How has becoming a Big Couple impacted you?

It’s almost like having a new member of your family! We are excited when good things happen in his life, and worry about how he’s doing in school or who he’s hanging out with. It’s been an extremely rewarding and enriching experience in our lives. It’s not just that we are friends to him, he has become a friend to us.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a Big, but isn’t quite sure it’s for them?

It’s important that they understand that the time commitment is not trivial. However, the time you end up investing with your Little will pay you aback in ways you never expected, and the relationship you build makes it all worthwhile. At the end of the day, all you have to do is be a young person’s friend, and this is something anyone can do.
